CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Charlie dropped his gear on his desk chair early the next morning and grabbed a coffee from the nearly empty pot in the lounge. He’d closed his eyes a few times in the truck during the night, but he never fell asleep.

Jacob’s possible return weighed heavy on his mind, but what kept him awake, were visions of Scarlett finding his hammer in the kitchen and bashing the shit out of his truck windows. Not that he didn’t deserve it after talking her into a full renovation, then abandoning her to finish alone.

“Early shift?” O’Neal came in the office for a cup a coffee and stopped at the edge of the counter.

“She kicked me out.” His throat felt raspy from lack of sleep.

O’Neal widened his gaze for a split second, just enough to allow his shock to show. “Smart woman. I wouldn’t want you on my couch either.”

Charlie grunted, grabbed his cup, and made for his desk without another word.

O’Neal followed. “Hey, man. I know it sucks.”

“As much as I enjoy your pep talks,” Charlie began, as he faced O’Neal at his desk, “I have a week’s worth of paperwork to catch up on, and a cheap contractor to find to finish Rose House.” His laptop buzzed when he lifted the screen, and the site he’d already started searching in the truck flickered.

“I guess pulling you out leaves her renovation in the lurch.”

No shit, Sherlock. “I have three candidates, all out of Scarlett’s price range, but the only guy she’d come close to affording isn’t bonded or insured. Still, better than having Hank Hicks nosing around her for a week.” The burn of jealousy lit through his stomach at the thought.

“Hank Hicks wouldn’t know what to do with a woman like Scarlett. We’d find him balled up in the corner of her bedroom, crying for his mama if she ever gave him a chance.”

“Unless I can find someone better, that image just might become our reality.” He narrowed his gaze on O’Neal. “Of course, I could finish the job in my off time.”

O’Neal’s eyes narrowed. “You have orders.” He leaned on the corner of the desk and put his coffee down next to Charlie’s laptop. “Are you serious about getting a detective spot?”

The familiar speeding-up of his heart thumped against his ribs. Before Scarlett, there hadn’t been a single thought more prominent in his mind. Nothing else mattered more than that damn coveted spot, until Scarlett had sauntered into his life with that red coat and those fuck-me boots. His cheek twitched at the next thought. In a couple of weeks, she’d be gone, and he could either be an officer with a street beat, or the detective he’s always wanted to be since joining the force. “Always.”

“Then do yourself a favor, and get her off your mind. Troll the bars. Hit a decent strip joint. Pay for a lap dance. Whatever the hell it takes to forget Scarlett Rose ever existed.” When Charlie didn’t respond, O’Neal tapped his desk. “Don’t believe me? Ask Mitch.
